UPS adds extra holiday fee for imports/exports; Amazon expands Multi-Channel Fulfillment
UPS is add surcharges to some of its import and export services, according to Supply Chain Dive. The surcharges will apply September 28 through January 17, and so are focused on the holiday season when brands are shipping peak volumes.
The fees range from $.20 to $.50 per pound, or $.20 to $.52 per package. Affected countries are India, Canada, most of Europe, and for most Worldwide services all countries. The fees are also subject to any fuel surcharge.
Previous years’ surcharges have been focused on China lanes, but this year they are not. FedEx currently has import and export charges through October 19 but has not announced such holiday surcharges at this time.
Amazon is offering its Multi-Channel Fulfillment services for any merchants selling on Walmart, Shopify, and Stein. This service ranges all fulfillment steps for merchants selling on newer channels like Temu and TikTok Shop. This allows sellers to maintain a single pool of inventory with Amazon, rather than splitting their inventory across different warehouses for different channels.
Amazon said this consolidation results in 19% fewer out-of-stock rates and a higher inventory turnover of 12%.
Amazon also announced a related push to better serve shipping lanes to manufactures. Initiatives include more storage options near manufacturing centers like China and Vietnam, and more direct routes from manufacturing zones to final destinations. Amazon expects their Global Logistics services will serve 96% of the goods merchants are shipping from the factory to FBA locations.
